On July 23, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) formally approved and recognized the Indian Cricketers’ Association. It is a official players’ body for former cricket players - both men and women. The ICA is different from other player associations around the world because it is only limited to former players. Unlike players’ bodies in other countries, they also include current players.
Before the BCCI decided to approve the association, India and Pakistan were the only major cricket countries that don’t have a recognized players’ body.
The Indian Cricketers’ Association is not affiliated to the Federation of International Cricketers’ Association (FICA). It is an organization that accommodates the activities of all national players’ associations. ICA is a non-profit company, they have a goal to sustain the welfare of ex-cricketers.
ICA was formed as a result of the Lodha reforms that aimed for the formation of a players’ association that will sustain the welfare of cricketers who dedicated their lives in the field, like for example the Indian Cricket Team who represents the country for international cricket tournaments.
So, who can be an ICA member and what are the criteria for membership?
-
Male and female ex-cricketers who have played at least one international match in any format of the game at the senior level.
-
Male ex-cricketers who have played at least 10 First-Class matches in any format of the game at the senior level.
-
Female ex-cricketers who have played at least five First-Class matches in any format of the game at the senior level.
-
Differently-abled ex-cricketers, who have played either international cricket or First-Class cricket, where such cricket is recognized as such by the ICC or the BCCI and is organized by the BCCI or a body recognized by the ICC or the BCCI, in any format of the game at the senior level.
The association is led by three directors. First is former India captain Kapil Dev, then former India fast bowler Ajit Agarkar and former India women’s captain Shanta Rangaswamy.
